St. Billy Preston of Hollywood Park
For more than four decades, St. Billy was known to racing
fans all over California as always eager to initiate the
novices located in the lower grandstands. (He never set foot
in the Turf Club.) Billy served his flock, while guided by the
Holy Trinity: Win, Place, and Show. He created a virtual
army of Pari-mutuel Party Revelers. On May 21st, 1964, at
Bay Meadows Racecourse, Billy Preston presented his “pick
six” winners to a newcomer and disappeared into a spray of
green mist. Twenty-two people witnessed the ascension.
